Installing a SolutionPack

After you log in as an administrator, you can install a SolutionPack from Centralized Management.

Before you begin

  • Determine whether you need a SolutionPack license file by checking the feature names and expiration dates listed in Centralized Management > License Management. If the license is not listed, obtain one by completing a Support Request (SR) form, which you can find on the EMC support website http://support.emc.com.

  • Make sure the core modules, such as the Module-Manager, are up-to-date on all servers since not all module dependencies are validated during the SolutionPack installation.
  • Look for additional SolutionPack-specific installation instructions on the EMC Community Network (ECN) or the EMC Support website. For example, more detailed information may be found in the EMC M&R SolutionPack Articles for Service Assurance Suite. Many SolutionPacks have read me files embedded in the software. You can find these after you install the SolutionPack by navigating to Centralized Management > SolutionPacks. Expand the tree and click on the SolutionPack to open the Properties page where the document is listed.

Procedure

  1. Log in and select Administration.
  2. Select Centralized Management in the Administration tree.
  3. Select SOLUTIONPACK CENTER.
  4. Select the SolutionPack in the Browse and Install SolutionPacks screen.
  5. Read the summary information and click Install.
  6. Select the components to install.
    1. Type the instance name.
    2. Select the server in one or more list boxes. For example, select the server in the Data collection and Reports list boxes.
    3. Click Next.
  7. For each list box you select, a screen appears.
    1. Click Next after you complete each screen.
    2. Click Install after you complete the last screen.
    The installation process begins.
  8. Select the maximize arrow next to each component to view the installation process.
When the installation successfully completes, green checkmarks appear.

After you finish

After the installation is complete, select Centralized Management > SolutionPack to verify the installed SolutionPack.

Updating Independent SolutionPackBlocks

Update the Independent SolutionPackBlocks to use the latest module configurations and report templates.

Before you begin

  • Ensure the EMC M&R foundation (core modules) has been updated on all hosts.
  • Ensure you renamed your old Default ReportPack to make it easier to distinguish the old version from the new one after the upgrade.
  • If you are running EMC M&R on multiple servers, synchronize your deployment to ensure Centralized Management has information about all modules and versions installed in the distributed environment. Navigate to Centralized Management > Packages Management > Packagesand click Synchronization. Select Retrieve the latest packages from the remote servers checkbox and click OK.
  • Update the Health SolutionPack. This installs the generic reports module (as a dependency) and also uploads the latest version of the Default ReportPack. Navigate to Centralized Management > SolutionPacks > Application > EMC Watch4net Healthand update the report SolutionPackBlock.
Note Image
The SolutionPackBlock update process overwrites any manual edits made to the XML configuration files and report customizations. Always use the Centralized Management web interface to update SolutionPackBlocks. Never use CLI commands to update SolutionPackBlocks. If you have already made manual edits or customized reports, back them up.

Procedure

  1. In the left panel of Centralized Management, click SolutionPacks > Independent SolutionPackBlocks.
A yellow star icon appears next to each SolutionPackBlock that requires updating.
  2. For each Independent SolutionPackBlock that requires updating, do the following:
    1. Click the yellow star icon next to it.
    2. When the SolutionPack Update page appears, carefully review the settings on this page and make changes as needed. Most values are from the existing SolutionPack but some may be default values for the updated SolutionPack.
While updating blocks, check the property store configuration. Wherever it is set to "localhost," change it to the frontend hostname.
    3. Click Update. The SolutionPack Update page provides information on the progress of this SolutionPack update.
    4. Select the maximize arrow next to view the update progress. When the update successfully completes, a green checkmark appears at the top of the page.

After you finish

Repeat the update process for each Independent SolutionPackBlock marked with the yellow star icon before proceeding to update SolutionPackBlocks.
