Understanding Access and Roles in the ViPR User Interface (UI)

Overview

This article describes how to access the ViPR UI, and the modes of entry into the ViPR UI.

This article applies to EMC ViPR 2.0.

There are two modes of access into the ViPR UI:

By default, you enter ViPR in the User mode. If logged in with a user role, you will only have access to the User mode. If logged in with an administration role, you will have access to both the User and Admin modes.

Access the ViPR UI

Before you begin

Initial ViPR setup steps, which are configured during installation of the ViPR Controller, must have been completed. Refer to the Install EMC ViPR Controller article for the steps performed during the initial log in to the ViPR UI.

Procedure

  1. Open https://ViPR_virtual_ip with a supported browser and log in with the user credentials created for you.
    By default you enter into ViPR in the User mode. If logged in with an administrator role, you can continue to switch to the Admin mode.
  2. Open the User menu located in the upper right corner of the ViPR UI.
  3. Click Switch to Admin.

ViPR UI access modes and features

Access modes, and access to UI features are dependent on the role you have been assigned.

The two access modes are:

The Role Matrix provides a high-level overview of the availability of the ViPR UI menu items for each role.

Refer to Understanding ViPR users, roles, and ACLs for more information about assigning ViPR roles.

Admin roles and feature access

The Admin mode is presented to users assigned administration roles. The assigned role defines the permissions, and options that are available in the ViPR UI.

User roles and feature access

The User mode is presented to users assigned Tenant Administrator, Project Adminstrator, Tenant Approvers roles, and all other roles and end-users (no role) . The assigned role defines the tasks and options that are available in the ViPR UI.

Users with an administration role, will also have access to all the user roles listed below.

Role matrix

A matrix is provided to show the availability of menu items for each role. Where a user has more than one assigned role, the access rights are additive.
