ViPR SRM 3.7 – Launch ViPR Controller from ViPR SRM

Table of Contents

ViPR Controller launching features

ViPR SRM supports direct access to ViPR Controller from the ViPR SRM Console. Context-sensitive launching choices place you at the appropriate location in the ViPR Controller user interface for the task you want to perform.

Administrators who are monitoring or researching enterprise storage resources in ViPR SRM often need to perform administrative tasks in ViPR Controller. For example, they might need to address capacity issues, such as adding volumes or pools to existing arrays. Or, they might be researching alerts or performance issues and want to access the ViPR Controller system logs for a specific virtual data center or a specific volume, pool, or device.

ViPR Controller launching features include:

Launch ViPR Controller Dashboard

You can launch ViPR Controller to open to the Dashboard from many locations in the SolutionPack for EMC ViPR Controller reports and from selected global reports.

Before you begin

The following procedure describes how to open the ViPR Controller Dashboard from a virtual data center name. You can do the same thing by right-clicking on other ViPR Controller objects, such as a virtual pool, file, volume, in the reports.

Procedure

  1. Log in to the ViPR SRM Console.
  2. Navigate to Report Library > EMC ViPR > Virtual Data Centers > data_center_name > Inventory > Virtual Pools.
  3. In the Virtual Pools report, right-click a virtual pool name, and choose Launch ViPR.

Depending on your previous activity with ViPR Controller, one of the following pages opens:

    • The ViPR Controller log in window.
    • The ViPR Controller Dashboard. If you recently logged in to ViPR Controller and cookies are enabled, the ViPR Controller log in window is bypassed until the cookie expires.
    • The browser certificates warning page. Depending on your security settings, you might be prompted to accept certificates for the ViPR Controller server connections when logging in for the first time.
  4. If needed, accept and install certificates and log in to ViPR Controller.
Follow standard procedures for accepting and installing certificates for your web browser. For guidelines using the Internet Explorer browser, see Accept and install certificates later in this article.
    Note Image
A ViPR Controller installation might involve several servers. If so, you need to accept and install certificates several times, once for each of the servers in the ViPR Controller installation.

After you successfully install certificates and log in to ViPR Controller, the Dashboard opens.

  5. Perform actions in ViPR Controller.
You can perform actions according to the permissions granted to your ViPR Controller log on credentials.

Launch ViPR Controller in context to current object

You can open ViPR Controller to a page appropriate to a specific ViPR Controller object, including Volumes, File Shares, Virtual Arrays, and Hosts. You can also directly access the ViPR Controller system logs.

The following procedure shows some examples of context-sensitive launch points.

Procedure

  1. Log in to the ViPR SRM Console.
  2. Navigate to Report Library > EMC ViPR > Virtual Data Centers.
  3. On the Virtual Data Centers report, right-click a data center name and choose Show Volume in ViPR.

ViPR opens to the page for that data center's volume, if you have permission to access that page.

  4. Return to the ViPR SRM browser window.
  5. Right-click on the virtual data center name again and then choose Show Logs in ViPR.
ViPR Controller opens to the system logs page.

  6. Return to the ViPR SRM browser window and navigate to Report Library > EMC ViPR > Virtual Data Centers > <data_center_name> > Inventory > Hosts > List of Hosts.
  7. In the List of Hosts report, right-click a host name and choose Show Host in ViPR.

ViPR Controller opens to the page for that host, if you have permission to access that page. If your ViPR Controller login credentials do not allow access, you see a message similar to the following:

ViPR Controller launch points in the global reports

Some global reports contain context-sensitive launch points into ViPR Controller so you can configure components and fix issues pointed out in the reports.

The following reports support entry directly into ViPR SRM:

These reports show storage for ViPR Controller managed storage as well as storage managed in other systems. For the rows that are reporting ViPR Controller storage, you can right-click the storage component name to expose an action menu of entry points into ViPR Controller. In many cases, the actions land you on the specific configuration page for the component.

Identify ViPR components on the global reports

Many of the ViPR SRM global reports that offer a launch point into ViPR Controller contain a column that identifies which rows are associated with ViPR Controller.

The ViPR Controller column is hidden by default. Use the following procedure to unhide the column and display the ViPR Controller device name associated with each ViPR Controller component.

Note Image
The ViPR Controller device name is an SRM value assigned during ViPR Controller discovery. Part of the installation process for the SolutionPack for ViPR Controller is ViPR Controller discovery, during which the user enters a unique, friendly name for the ViPR Controller. This is the name that appears in the ViPR Controller columns on the reports.

Procedure

  1. On the Console, go to the report where you want to unhide the ViPR Controller column.
  2. To unhide the column for your login account:
    1. Hover the cursor over the upper right corner of the report until a small menu of icons appears, and click the Customize Table Columns icon.
    2. On the Table Customization dialog, in the Displayed columns list, scroll to find the column named ViPR Controller, and click the box to select it.
    3. Click Save and Apply to make the change persist for future login sessions. Click Apply to implement the change for the current login session only.
The ViPR Controller column appears as the last column.
      Note Image
You can rearrange column order on the Customize Table Columns dialog by dragging the column name to the desired location in the list.

  3. To unhide the column for all users:
    1. Click EDIT MODE.
    2. Click the Report Details: Table tab.
    3. Locate the blue bar for Property: ViPR Controller, and click the small arrow to expand it.
    4. Expand Advanced Properties.
    5. For Display Customization, choose one of the following:
      • displayed, user customizable
      • displayed, always
    6. Click Save.
    7. Click BROWSE MODE to return to the report.
The ViPR Controller column appears as the last column.
      Note Image
You can rearrange column order on the Report Details: Table tab by dragging the column's blue bar to the desired location in the list.

  4. To re-sort the report so that the ViPR Controller components are listed first:
    1. Click the small arrows in the ViPR Controller column header to sort the report by that column.
    2. Click twice to sort in descending order, effectively making the rows associated with ViPR Controller appear at the top of the report.
