Report generation features

ViPR SRM provides easy-to-generate default reports and many convenient options for sharing, saving, and scheduling reports. The scenarios in this article show how to generate a default report that lists usable and free storage capacity, save the results, schedule the report for a weekly run, and email results to a set of recipients.

The ViPR SRM default reports include both summary level dashboards and aggregated detail reports showing, for example, storage statistics by usage, by purpose, by service level, by type of storage, by array, and so on. Detailed reports are also available showing configuration information about individual storage arrays.

To generate any report, click the report title in the Console's report tree. The report is dynamically generated and appears on the Console, where you can examine it, customize it if needed, and perform any of the following options from the Export or > Tools menu:
  • Export results—Supported export formats include PDF, Excel, comma-separated values (CSV), XML, and various graphic outputs.
  • Schedule automatic report runs—The scheduling interface lets you schedule automatic report runs at designated times. you can configure the disposition of the report results.
  • Email report results—You can email any generated report to yourself. In addition, you can set up a list of recipients for scheduled report results.
  • Favorite a report—The Favorites node near the top of the report tree provides convenient access to reports that you use frequently.
  • Store a report snapshot—You can store a point-in-time copy of report results. The snapshot is accessible from the Stored Reports node near the top of the report tree.

Generate gold service level capacity report

ViPR SRM provides out-of-the-box capacity reports by service level. These reports identify the arrays in your environment configured to support the service level. They also provide details about used and free capacity for the service level on each array.

You receive a request to provide 1 TB of Gold storage for a new application deployment. You want to perform the research now to determine which arrays contain this amount of free storage and save the results to show to colleagues in a meeting later in the day.

The Service Level Capacity/Gold report lists arrays with configured Gold storage and shows their storage usages and free capacity. After examining the report, you decide to save the report results in the Stored Reports node so that you can redisplay the same results later without having to rerun the report.

  1. Log in to the Console and navigate to Explore > Storage > More Reports > Service Level Capacity > Gold.
The report results appear on the Console.

  2. Review the Free column to determine which arrays can satisfy your 1 TB storage requirement.
You see that only one array, named XIV 7825363, contains enough free space to meet that requirement.
  3. To save a snapshot of these results, click Tools > Store This Report.
The informational message Report successfully stored briefly appears on the Console.
  4. To redisplay the report results later, in the report tree, click Stored Reports > report_name.
The previously generated report results appear on your Console.

You identified an array that can accommodate the request for Gold storage, and you saved the results for quick access later.

Generate SLA capacity report

ViPR SRM can help you monitor service level agreement (SLA) storage capacity by highlighting groups that are close to capacity.

You receive a request to monitor capacity in the Platinum, Gold, and Silver service levels and make sure that these groups do not experience space issues.

The Usable Capacity by Service Level dashboard shows summary level information about capacity and usage for each service level. This report also flags groups that are close to running out of free capacity.

  1. Log in to the Console and navigate to Dashboards > Storage > Enterprise Capacity Dashboards > Usable Capacity by Service Level.
The report results appear on the Console.

  2. Review the % Used column to determine available storage capacity for each service level.

You notice several red X's indicating that the FAST VP level is out of free space and that the Platinum level is about to run out of free space.

You identified an easy way to monitor service level capacity, and you know about two groups that need immediate attention.
