Storage pool details

ViPR SRM provides reports that show discovered details about LUNs and storage pools in an enterprise. These scenarios show how to obtain detailed LUN information for possible reclamation purposes and how to analyze capacity levels of individual storage pools.

The ViPR SRM Explore node displays discovered configuration objects across the enterprise. These exploratory reports are simple enumerations of objects of a given type.

The LUN reports are located under Explore > Storage > More Reports > More Storage Inventories. The following reports are available:

A consolidated report showing capacity and utilization details for storage pools is available by navigating to Explore > Storage > More Reports > Storage Pools. You can click on any row in that report to obtain more details about a specific storage pool.

All table reports in the Explore node support sorting and filtering.

View detailed LUN information

ViPR SRM produces lists of LUNs that you can sort and filter according to your current analysis requirements.

As a storage administrator, you need to create a page that shows all LUNs in your environment that are mapped to front-end ports, but are not masked to any hosts. You need this information for thin pools only, for possible storage reclamation and reuse.

  1. Log in to the Console and navigate to Explore > Storage > More Reports > More Storage Inventories > All LUNs.
The report results appear on the Console. The report contains many columns with much detail about all discovered LUNs. The following example shows the few columns that can help you solve your current analysis request.

  2. To exclude all Pool Types except Thin Pools:
    1. Click the Filter icon at the top of the > Pool Type column.

    2. In the pop-up dialog, type Thin*.

    3. Press Enter.
The new report results appear, showing only LUNs with a pool type of "Thin Pool".
  3. To sort the displayed LUNs by whether they are masked to hosts:
    1. Click the Sort icon at the top of the > Is Masked? column.

The report sorts by values in that column in ascending order.
  4. To save the results as an Excel worksheet, click Export > XLS.
You now have a list of LUNs assigned to thin pools that are unmasked. These are LUNs that are candidates for space reclamation.

Analyze storage utilization in storage pools

ViPR SRM provides easy access to information about storage pools, including pool utilization and the LUNs, file systems, disks, and subscriptions associated with a storage pool.

As a storage administrator, you need to monitor storage pools in the environment and understand pool utilization rates. Occasionally, you also need more details about the composition and usage of a storage pool.

You can view and compare storage utilization statistics on the Storage Pools report. By clicking a row in this report, details about that pool appear below the summary, allowing you to explore pool details without navigating away from the main report.

  • LUN Consumers
  • File System/Flex Vols Consumers
  • LUN Contributors
  • Disk Contributors
  • Subscriptions

This scenario shows how to create a custom page displaying aggregate pools that are close to capacity. It also shows how to obtain more detail about a specific storage pool.

  1. Log in to the Console and navigate to Explore > Storage > More Reports > Storage Pools.
The report results appear on the Console. The following image shows the columns that are included in this report.
  2. To filter the rows so that only information about Aggregate pools displays:
    1. Click the filter icon in the > > Pool Type column.
    2. Type A in the pop-up dialog, and then select the value Alternate from the list of values that appears.
      Note Image
Alternatively, type the entire filter value (Alternate) in the pop-up dialog.
    3. Press Enter.
The report redisplays with content only for Aggregate pools.
  3. To sort the report so that the Aggregate pools with the highest percentage of utilization appear first, click the % Used column header two times.
The first sort rearranges rows in ascending order, and the second sort reverses the order. Now you can quickly see which Aggregate pools are used the most. Red X's highlight pools that have reached full capacity or are close to it.
  4. To save these results, click Export and then click an export format, such as > PDF or > XSL.
The report appears in the new format in a separate web browser window. You can save it using your browser commands.
  5. Return to the ViPR SRM report window.
  6. To see details about the first storage pool in the list, which is 100% used, click in the row.
Multiple reports appear showing details about the underlying storage in the pool. For example, you learn the following details about the pool named tradvol1, which uses array losaq027:
