ViPR 2.1 - Configure and Add a Cisco Switch to ViPR

When you add a Cisco switch to ViPR , ViPR discovers and registers the Cisco VSANs with the switch. Through discovery of the Cisco switch topology, ViPR can identify the hosts and storage systems connected through the same switch. This allows ViPR to automatically build the connectivity between the hosts and storage systems when you run a provisioning service, such as "Creating a block volume for a host."

Cisco switch login credentials
Obtain the login credentials to use when adding the Cisco switch to ViPR. The account must have privileges to provision (configure the mode of zone, zonesets, and VSAN) and to show the FCNS database.
Configure the switch as follows before adding it to ViPR:
- Enable SSH.
- Create the VSANs that will be used by ViPR on the Cisco switch.
- Assign the appropriate interfaces to the VSAN database.
- Configure any ISL links, and port channels, for multiple switch networks, and validate that the ISL links are operational. Doing so ensures that the FCNS database is correctly distributed and current on any switches that you add to ViPR.
It is highly recommended, but not required that you:
- Implement redundant connections between all ISL connections, so that the failure of a single ISL link does not partition VSANs.
- Enable the enhanced zone mode.

The following steps describe how to add the Cisco switch to ViPR using the ViPR UI. To use the REST API to add a Cisco switch to ViPR refer to Add Network Systems (Fabric Managers) and SAN Networks to ViPR Using the ViPR REST API article.
- Go to the page.
- Click Add.
- Type a switch name.
- Select Cisco MDS for the type of switch.
- Type the host address for the switch.
- Leave the default, or type the switch port.
- Type the credentials for an account that has administrator privileges to the switch.
ViPR discovers, and registers the Cisco switch and associated VSANs. The Physical Assets> Fabric Manager page displays the Cisco switch and the Physical Assets> Networks page displays the VSANs.
After you finish
Each VSAN you configured to work with ViPR should be visible from at least one registered switch in ViPR. If multiple registered switches have access to the same VSAN, ViPR will take the switches directly connected to the storage port being zoned as the control point to add or remove zones.Back to Top
Optionally, you can configure the VSANs using the following procedures:
- Deregister Cisco VSANs from ViPR networks
To exclude the VSAN from being used as a resource n a ViPR service.
- Assign storage ports and host ports to Cisco VSANs in the ViPR networks
To specify the storage and host ports that ViPR will use for connectivity during provisioning. By default, ViPR selects the ports to use for connectivity between the storage and hosts during provisioning. However, if you specify the ports, ViPR uses those ports for connectivity during provisioning.
- Only System Administrators can deregister Cisco VSANs from ViPR networks.
- When you add the associated Cisco switch to ViPR from the Fabric Manager page, ViPR discovers, and registers the associated VSANs, and the Networks page displays them.
- You can deregiser, but not delete VSANs from the ViPR networks.
- Select .
- To deregister a VSAN in the list, select it.
- Click Deregister.
Before you begin
- Only System Administrators can assign storage and host ports to VSANs in the ViPR networks.
- ViPR adds, discover, and registers, VSANs when the associated Cisco switch is added to ViPR from the Fabric Manager page.
- You can assign storage ports, or host ports, or both to a VSAN. ViPR uses whichever ports you have assigned to the VSAN, when the VSAN is used for a provisioning service. If you have not assigned ports to the VSAN, ViPR automates the assignment of ports to the VSAN.
- Go to the page.
- Click the network name to open the Edit Fibre Channel Network page.
- Add storage ports to the network. Click:
- to select from the list of discovered array ports.
- to enter the storage ports manually.
- Add host ports to the network. Click:
- to select from the list of discovered host ports.
- to enter the host ports manually.
- Click Save.
