This use case is driven by the inherent characteristics of scale. Although $/GB and $/IOPS are always important, storage consolidation means that with much more data and workloads on a single platform, the resulting storage array must meet higher standards of Reliability, Availability and Serviceability (RAS). Additionally, as more and more workloads are consolidated, the design must take into consideration the ability to scale without increasing management overhead or complexity. For these reasons, the tightly coupled scale-out architecture is the correct architecture choice for this workload.
