Cloud Technology FAQ | Cloud Computing

What is cloud computing technology?

Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.

What is a Hybrid Cloud?

The hybrid cloud is a composition of two or more distinct cloud infrastructures (private, community, or public) that remain unique entities, but are bound together by standardized or proprietary technology that enables data and application portability (e.g., cloud bursting or load balancing between clouds).

What are the key business benefits of hybrid cloud?

Cost reduction and control through the balance of capital and operational expense when procuring cloud services. This enables and accelerates the business to innovate faster when delivering differentiated value to their customers.

What are the key IT benefits of hybrid cloud?

Improved efficiency of on-premises resources and increased agility to meet the real-time needs of the business through self-service coupled with management insights and cost transparency.

What are the key developer benefits of hybrid cloud?

Provides developers with a ‘just works’ experience to spend more time coding and less time managing configuration and deployment resulting in a shorter time from code to production.

Do I have to have an on-premises private cloud if I want to move to a hybrid cloud model?

No. A private cloud can be hosted or managed, on or off-premises, for example, with a colocation provider and then connected to one or more public cloud services to create a hybrid cloud.

How are public and private clouds connected?

Clouds are connected through APIs in a technical sense and through partnerships in a business sense. Private cloud vendors sometimes offer public cloud services or public cloud vendors often partner with private cloud vendors to create hybrid clouds.

Are hybrid clouds more or less secure than private clouds?

With hybrid cloud, there is a shared responsibility security model. While the public cloud provider maintains their hardened and secured infrastructure and application offerings, the customer is responsible for the security within their own infrastructure and applications along with access management controls to ensure only the appropriate individuals have the correct level of access.

What is cloud bursting?

Cloud bursting is the ability to “burst” or extend into another cloud during peak times, when it needs more resources. Frequent examples cited are e-commerce companies that need more capacity during the holidays.

What is the basic difference between a traditional and a cloud-native application?

A traditional application is monolithic in design with an n-tier application architecture that generally consists of database, application, and web servers that are tightly coupled with the infrastructure and relies on it for providing availability. A cloud-native application is one that uses open, common standards and that is dynamic in nature and highly scalable with no dependencies on the underlying infrastructure.

Does EMC sell hybrid cloud products and solutions?

The strategically aligned businesses within EMC offer a wide variety of products and solutions that enable customers to create a hybrid cloud, ranging from a choice of Cloud Management Platforms with Virtustream xStream and VMware vRealize Automation to the engineered solutions such as Enterprise Hybrid Cloud for traditional applications and Native Hybrid Cloud for cloud-native applications to name a few.

Do EMC’s data protection and storage products support a hybrid cloud model?

Both EMC DataDomain and NetWorker support tiering backups and long-term retention data to a public cloud thru the use of CloudBoost technology. EMC’s CloudArray technology allows our storage products to support the tiering of primary block and CIFS data off to a variety of major public clouds.

Does EMC offer public cloud services?

Yes, there are a variety of services offered by the Virtustream Enterprise Public Cloud, VMware vCloud Air, and our network of EMC-Powered Cloud Service Provider Partners to support traditional and cloud-native applications.
