Going to Massachusetts for the Human Resources Leadership Development Program (HRLDP) orientation was a big step out of my comfort zone as I have never been to United States and never interacted extensively with people from other cultures.
As a welcome to the orientation week, the previous HRLDP class invited me for a boating trip before my orientation week commences. The boating trip was organized by Matthew Grupposo, a participant from the HRLDP class of 2014.
In the morning, I met Carlotta Bazzi (HRLDP2015 from Italy), Jennifer Janowski (HRLDP 2014 from Germany), Vikramdith (HRLDP 2014 from India) for the first time in the hotel before we drove off to meet Matthew at his house. At that time, I was really nervous about having to spend a Sunday afternoon with people that live half a globe away from me.
We left shortly after we reach Matthew’s house for the boating trip at a nearby lake. Subsequently, we had a short introduction and pizza on the boat. I started to loosen up only when we started swimming. I am a really bad swimmer, but they didn’t mind. They got me to put on a life jacket, taught me how to swim and that really made me feel part of the team. Throughout the boating trip, they gave me an overview of the program, the expectations, what they had been through and the difficulties they faced. Hearing their personal experiences make me feel like I am not alone in the journey and truly reassured me for what is ahead.
Even though, we come from all around the world, the camaraderie we form through the boating trip was amazing. It was a great opportunity for us to connect and to get to know each other in a social setting.
