EMC is at the forefront of technology that is rapidly changing the world in which we live. Whether in the office or on the go, we operate in this hyper-connected, agile, one-click world. The increasing dependence on tablets and mobile devices—and the ability to operate them when and where we want—has never been greater.
To meet this growing demand, EMC has challenged itself to reach what IDC calls the “third platform” — the confluence of mobile, cloud, Big Data, and social initiatives. EMC IT’s mobile-first application initiative has been building iOS and Android apps that place EMC information a thumb-click away.
Early, popular apps including Mobile EMC, FileStore, Employee Lookup, and the popular Conference Room Locator focused on customer productivity and placed the IT Mobility program on the right track for future development. Moving forward, the objective remains to work with individual business units to build apps that meet their specific needs.
One of the earliest collaborations was around the eServices Support app. The iOS version has been available to customers for over a year, and the Android version released recently. The Mobility team remains engaged to ensure all IT-developed apps remain refreshed and up to date.
Peter Gandrup, Sr. Manager, Human Resources Business Intelligence and Analytics, notes that EMC’s IT Mobile Apps Dev team helped his group allow mobile access to InfoCentral’s human capital information. “EMC IT managed the engagement and provided guidance through all phases of the project, including project planning, initial icon design, security and performance considerations, and ultimate deployment to the App Store,” Peter says.
To accomplish this, the EMC IT Mobility team and accompanying Mobile Technical Competency Center have become the nerve center for mobile app development at EMC. The team provides a full suite of mobile development services such as UX design, development, testing, hosting, and ongoing support.
“We have assembled the skills, technologies, and services to fulfill EMC’s growing need and demand for internal and customer/partner-facing mobile applications,” says KK Krishnakumar, the Chief IT Architect who sponsored and leads the program. “As we move forward, this dynamic foundation will allow EMC to compete in a highly-competitive marketplace with high-quality services.”
To protect sensitive data, the EMC IT Mobility team led by Sadasiva Prathab, Director of Mobility, and Suresh Thankappan, Mobility architect, designed and engineered a unique end-to-end secure architecture for EMC assets through a combination of strong two-factor authentication, encryption, and data loss prevention.
"The IT Mobility Program team has done a wonderful job providing a secure authentication solution that meets the business needs of the Sales Essentials for iPad app while successfully navigating the particular requirements of the Global Security Office. We're pleased with the partnership and the outcome," says Randy Ziegler, Sr. Director, Mobile Marketing. Randy adds that the team has also leant its support to the Mobile App Summit for the past two years, which advances the mobile agenda across the company.
The Mobility team also collaborated with EMC’s Service Provider team and Marketing to develop a mobile app that facilitates connections between EMC Sales, EMC Service Providers, and EMC Service provider partners. The new EMC Service Provider (EMC SP) app allows direct interaction with customers, accelerates connections between Sales and Service Providers early in the campaign, and increases Sales engagement with Service Providers to drive EMC’s agenda and shorten the sales cycle.
“By working with the EMC IT Mobility team, we were able to provide a simple and fast method for EMC Sales reps to engage with our Service Provider partners and identify Service Providers that meet the customer’s needs,” says Steve Blanchette of the Global Alliance and Service Provider Enablement group. “We are now better positioned to add value with improved interactions with EMC Service Provider Sales teams.”
He continues, “The EMC SP iPad app was developed on an accelerated schedule to meet the needs of EMC Sales. The app can quickly identify which Service Provider to work with for a given customer situation. The EMC IT Mobility team worked within an extremely tight timeline to help release the app on schedule and meet the needs of the Sales team.”
Thanks to the success of each of these examples, EMC IT’s mobility team proved it could build apps that were as competitive in quality and price as those offered by external vendors, yet also met the customers’ needs and EMC’s security requirements. And when Salesforce released its Touch mobile app, the Mobility team was able to quickly package it within a secure container and offer a better experience for Salesforce.com users.
By executing on a vision two years in the making, EMC IT is on the leading edge of app development, bringing EMC’s touch and feel to technology we use every day. The dedicated team is in place and will continue to stay abreast of new technology to keep the information you need at your fingertips.
“The focus and determination our team has shown to get to this point has been tremendous,” Sadasiva adds. “Our mission is to construct a robust collection of mobile apps that benefit all of EMC and that continue to meet the needs of our constantly changing environment.”
