RSA Awarded HSPD-12 Contract to Support the U.S. Social Security Administration

RSA® Card Manager Engineered to Enable SSA to Securely Manage HSPD-12 Smart Card Lifecycles; Technology Empowers Government and Commercial Organizations to Assure Identities and Control Access as Part of an Information-Centric Security Strategy

Bedford, Mass., Thursday, December 21, 2006 -

RSA, The Security Division of EMC (NYSE: EMC), today announced that the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) selected the RSA® Card Manager solution to support Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) compliance on behalf of the Social Security Administration (SSA). Approved by GSA for use in HSPD-12 environments, RSA Card Manager software will help enable the SSA both to issue personal identity verification (PIV) cards to more than 100,000 agency employees and to manage the lifecycle of electronic certificates stored on these cards. This is another significant HSPD-12 win for RSA, following earlier wins with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Federal Trade Commission.

RSA Card Manager is a smart card management system designed to help federal agencies comply with HSPD-12. As required for GSA approval, RSA Card Manager is engineered to be an interoperable system that supports a broad range of third-party HSPD-12 solution components, including PIV-II cards, biometrics technology, hardware security modules and externally managed public key infrastructure offered by approved Shared Service Providers. An interoperable solution ensures that customers like SSA can leverage existing technology investments and benefit from vendor flexibility while supporting efforts to address HSPD-12 requirements.

In addition to deploying RSA Card Manager, SSA will also be using RSA® Authentication Client middleware, which can serve as the interface between a PIV card and the applications and/or infrastructure using digital certificates for actions such as authentication, encryption and digital signing. As part of the SSA's HSPD-12 solution, Oberthur Card Sytems will be supplying both the PIV cards and a bureau personalization service for mass production of cards. Jacobs & Sundstrom, which supported the SSA in an initial pilot, will be providing professional integration services around the complete HSPD-12 solution.

"As federal agencies like the SSA and the EPA address the challenges associated with HSPD-12, RSA can help deliver an end-to-end and interoperable solution that will provide an effective option for their short- and long-term needs," said Steve Alfieris, vice president and general manager, EMC Federal Systems Division. "EMC, and our security division, RSA, look forward to continuing to provide leading technology expertise and customer service to the SSA, and helping them successfully meet HSPD-12 requirements in 2006 and beyond."
