EMC Recognized for Environmental Excellence

EMC's Worldwide Manufacturing Receives ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard Certification

Hopkinton,, Friday, September 10, 2004 -

EMC Corporation, the world leader in information storage and management, today announced its worldwide manufacturing facilities have been recognized for environmental excellence. National Quality Assurance (NQA) certified EMC's North American manufacturing centers to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 Environmental Management Standard. The EMC facilities produce the market-leading EMC Symmetrix, EMC CLARiiON, EMC Celerra and EMC Centera families of tiered storage, and are located in Franklin, Massachusetts, and Apex, North Carolina. EMC's ISO 14001 certified European manufacturing facility, which supports customers outside of North America, is located in Cork, Ireland.

Ron Kurtzman of NQA said, "We applaud EMC for the efforts it has made on behalf of the environment. Unfortunately, good environmental management is typically portrayed as a hindrance to business rather than as an asset, but companies like EMC understand that instituting a sound environmental management system like ISO 14001 leads to a more efficient manufacturing process, improved employee safety and higher profits, and it results in a much cleaner world. Today fewer than one out of every 10 North American companies has met the environmental demands required to be ISO 14001 compliant, but, with industry leaders like EMC setting the example, good environmental policy is on its way to becoming the norm rather than the exception."

ISO 14001 is a standardized management system that provides an internationally recognized framework for environmental management, measurement, evaluation and auditing. EMC's ISO 14001 certification complements its existing ISO 9001:2000 certification, which requires the highest standards of quality management and has been maintained by EMC for more than a decade at its manufacturing facilities around the world.

"Recognition of our environmental efforts is an important achievement," said Dave Donatelli, EMC's Executive Vice President of Storage Platforms Operations. "We have placed a priority on being a good corporate citizen to our neighbors without compromising the highest-quality standards for our systems and software. These ISO certifications are testaments to our commitment to delivering exceptional, world-class information storage and management solutions to customers around the globe."
