America West Airlines Advances Technology With EMC

Airline Drives Out Costs, Speeds Delivery with EMC ControlCenter; Protects Reservation and Flight Operations Information with EMC SRDF

Hopkinton,, Thursday, March 27, 2003 -

EMC Corporation announced today that America West Airlines has consolidated a dispersed storage environment onto EMC Symmetrix® and CLARiiON® networked storage systems and the EMC ControlCenter™ family of management software to achieve heightened operational efficiency and more rapid deployment of new services to users and customers.

Joe Beery, America West Airlines' Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, said, "The economic downturn and a wave of new regulations have created one of the most historically challenging periods for airlines. We consolidated our distributed storage onto EMC to address growing pressures to drive more efficiency and achieve a greater return on our IT infrastructure investment. The economies of scale of standardizing on EMC networked storage and software allows us to significantly lower the costs of managing our information."

"With EMC ControlCenter software, we better utilize our current storage capacity. Furthermore, EMC's StorageScope software provides a window into our storage infrastructure, allowing us to identify potential problems at the storage network or infrastructure level and respond before the problems become real."

America West Airlines is an industry leader in applying rigorous ROI and operational efficiency standards to everything it does—from innovative, low-cost fare structures to IT investments. America West standardized its flight operations, revenue management, airport kiosks and all other major applications onto a 10-terabyte EMC storage infrastructure. The EMC Symmetrix and CLARiiON networked storage environments provide consolidated storage to Compaq Windows, Sun Solaris and Fujitsu UNIX servers, and Unisys and IBM mainframe computers.

Business Continuity

America West utilizes EMC SRDF® (Symmetrix Remote Data Facility) software to replicate business-critical data between EMC Symmetrix storage systems located at two data centers miles apart. For further protection, America West will extend SRDF data replication to include a third site.

Beery said, "SRDF dramatically improved our resilience to suffering a systems failure. We're able to drive more return from our business continuity investment by co-locating our development and test services in the same backup facility. Within minutes, we can use SRDF to roll over our test and development servers to function as production servers if our primary facility is disabled."

EMC Global Services

EMC Global Services assisted America West with the design and implementation of the SAN, NAS and business continuity solutions. EMC Global Services helped facilitate the move of America West's Systems Operations Control Center (SOC) in the airport to another data center. The SOC tracks and manages information critical to the smooth operation of all America West flights, such as weather conditions, maintenance reports, flight status and plans, and crew management.

"EMC's software, storage and technical staff were essential to our efforts to move the Systems Operations Control from one facility to another without affecting the 24x7 operation of America West," said Beery.
