EMC Delivers Automated Resource Manager™ Software, Worl' First End-to-End Storage Provisioning Solution

Major New Software Enables Customers to Avoid Costly, Time-Consuming, Error-Prone Process of Manually Adding and Re-allocating Storage Resources

Chicago,, Wednesday, September 18, 2002 -

EMC Corporation today announced EMC Automated Resource Manager software, a new EMC open software product that applies the power of automation to greatly reduce the complexity and cost of provisioning storage resources. The world's first end-to-end automated storage provisioning solution, Automated Resource Manager greatly simplifies and accelerates end-to-end storage provisioning by automating the associated manual steps, reducing user errors and ensuring that each application receives the storage it needs based on business requirements.

A key member of the EMC ControlCenter™ family of integrated storage management software, Automated Resource Manager enables organizations to quickly and easily define and apply storage service-levels for specific application requirements. Delivering on EMC's AutoIS strategy of making multi-vendor networked storage environments simple, automated and open, Automated Resource Manager supports both EMC and non-EMC storage devices including EMC Symmetrix®, EMC CLARiiON®, and Hewlett-Packard StorageWorks. Additional third-party support is in development.

Chris De Backer, Deputy CIO, Belgacom, said, "When we began to craft our storage strategy, we looked for software solutions that would allow us to manage a complex heterogeneous environment. We found that EMC's AutoIS strategy was a perfect fit with our strategy to incorporate automation and openness throughout our information technology infrastructure. Because of this, we are able to become more independent from specific hardware vendors as well as drive efficiency and productivity into our operations. We're looking forward to new EMC software like automated provisioning to further reduce our costs and increase our delivery speed."

Erez Ofer, EMC Executive Vice President of Open Software, said, "Before Automated Resource Manager, a simple request for more storage could take days to fulfill. Now, that same procedure can be completed in minutes—by a single person. Automated Resource Manager accelerates IT's ability to respond to business needs, freeing highly-trained IT staff for more important problems than servicing the latest capacity request."

Nick Allen, Vice President and Research Director with Gartner, said, "Providing storage to an application is one of the most important functions at the heart of Storage Area Management. However, provisioning requires punching down through a surprising number of layers between the application and the actual bytes on a disk drive—a laborious and user-intensive endeavor. As storage networks and storage capacity usage continue to grow, technologies that automate provisioning will become absolutely critical to managing this growth, and will really resonate with users."

Provisioning via Storage Policies and Storage Pools

Automated Resource Manager enables customers to provision storage through user-set policies to support specific business needs. Policy options can be set for type of storage, RAID level, replication parameters, or number of paths between server and storage. For example, customers can assign demanding applications such as On-Line Transaction Processing (OLTP) the highest levels of storage performance and availability, and assign other service levels to less-critical applications.

The new software also provides for the provisioning and management of heterogeneous storage pools based on geography, application and functional organization. This capability enables customers to allocate and organize storage based on the way they organize their business. Once storage policies and storage pools are created via the ControlCenter console, customers then benefit from automation of the provisioning process—from the storage array through the Storage Area Network (SAN) to the host computer.

Automated Resource Manager will be available within 60 days.
