EMC Unveils WideSky™, Industr' First Storage Management Middleware

Enables EMC Application Software to Manage EMC and Non-EMC Storage Systems, Network Devices and Host Storage Resources

, October 29, 2001 -

EMC Corporation today announced WideSky™, the industry's first storage management middleware technology to address the complex issues of managing a multivendor storage infrastructure. Through a new access mechanism, WideSky masks the underlying complexity of multiple vendors' products, including storage systems, network devices and host storage resources. By using WideSky, EMC and its partners will create powerful, integrated storage management applications that address customers' entire multivendor storage environments.

Based on five years of success in providing application programming interface (API) access to advanced storage management features, WideSky extends the power of EMC management software to non-EMC environments. The availability of WideSky makes possible a new generation of integrated storage management applications that are freed from having to know the details of the underlying components.

"Customers are demanding open integration — the ability to freely choose the elements in their environment, while still having the capability to manage it as a whole," said Don Swatik, Vice President of Alliances and Information Sciences. "With WideSky, the storage management market has evolved to the next level — powerful, supportable management applications that work across multivendor environments."

Bob Passmore, Research Director at Gartner, said, "Technology that enables customers to manage their entire heterogeneous environment will simplify management, decrease time to market and lower total cost of ownership."

EMC also announced today multiple products that take advantage of the new WideSky storage middleware, including EMC ControlCenter™/Open Edition, EMC ControlCenter StorageScope™ and EMC ControlCenter Replication Manager™.
