EMC Extends Storage Solutions Lead With New E-Infostructure Developers Program

New Alliance Program Makes Wide Range of Information Sharing, Management and Protection APIs Available

Hopkinton,, Thursday, August 5, 1999 -

EMC Corporation today introduced the E-Infostructure Developers Program, a major expansion of its work to enable independent software vendors (ISVs) to develop applications that are tightly integrated with EMC's industry-leading Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems and software. As part of the program, EMC is now making a wide range of its APIs (application programming interfaces) available to development partners.

By providing wide-scale access to its APIs, which are software paths into a Symmetrix system and its software, EMC will enable customers to select from, and rapidly integrate, a large variety of information management, sharing and protection tools. These solutions, developed and sold by third-party companies, including software industry leaders like Oracle Corp. and BMC Software, will allow customers to more easily manage and implement mission-critical information infrastructures. By sharing its APIs with third-party application vendors, EMC helps customers take full advantage of the leading performance, availability and management features of EMC Enterprise Storage solutions, while eliminating costly, time-consuming application creation or customization.

"When it comes to storage, openness is defined by a customer's ease and flexibility in integrating a variety of applications with a storage system," said Carl Greiner, Vice President and Director, Enterprise Data Center Strategies at META Group. "An open architecture, based on shared APIs, is one of the key criteria that META Group has identified in its blueprint of what it takes to be successful in the storage industry. The whole industry is moving in this direction, and EMC is in the forefront."

EMC has offered access to select APIs since 1996. As a result, there are currently 16 independent software products that customers can deploy with their industry-leading Symmetrix systems and software, with more under development. The E-Infostructure Developers Program expands this initiative by making a wider range of APIs available and includes specialized technical training, API software development kits, and access to EMC's renowned engineering facilities for product development and integration. The API-based software products and the interoperability with every major operating system and server platform make Symmetrix Enterprise Storage the most flexible, open storage architecture in the world.

"Companies around the world are leveraging the Internet to transform their businesses into e-businesses, and they are building that infrastructure with solutions from Oracle and EMC," said Roger Choplin, Vice President, Data Storage Technology, at Oracle Corp., an EMC Global Alliance partner since 1995 and a member of the E-Infostructure Developers Program. "By helping ensure tight integration between Oracle8i and EMC Enterprise Storage, we are able to help customers rapidly deploy the highest performing and most highly-available Internet solutions to meet their demanding business requirements."

Robert M. Dutkowsky, EMC's Executive Vice President, Markets and Channels, added, "EMC is continuing to establish relationships with the world's best software vendors to ensure Symmetrix systems and software are flexible, open and interoperable, allowing customers to build an information infrastructure for the digital age ? their E-Infostructure ? with the applications they choose. By making our APIs available to everyone through the E-Infostructure Developers Program, EMC is again taking the lead in delivering proven, tested enterprise storage solutions that customers can easily deploy and integrate with their mission-critical applications."

Vic Mahadevan, Vice President & General Manager, Recovery and Storage Management at BMC Software, a member of the EMC E-Infostructure Developers Program, and one of the world's largest independent software vendors, said, "Integrating BMC Software's leading software management utilities with EMC Enterprise Storage systems and software allows our joint customers to get the most out of their technology investment. Customers are always looking for ways to maximize their resources. By working closely with EMC, we are able to provide our customers with tools that easily allow them to fully exploit the performance and management capabilities of both solutions."

The Symmetrix APIs, through the E-Infostructure Developers Program, are available immediately. Information on joining the program can be found at
