EMC Headquarters Earns LEED Gold

EMC’s LEED certification highlights include zero waste to landfill recycling and composting and 100 percent sewer water treatment

HOPKINTON, Mass., October 7, 2011 -

EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC) announced that the company has earned LEED Gold - Existing Buildings certification for its 650,000 square foot corporate headquarters located at 176 South Street, Hopkinton, Massachusetts. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized green building rating and certification system of the U.S. Green Building Council.

In 2007, EMC's Global Real Estate and Facilities team performed an initial LEED feasibility assessment of the building. Built in 2001, the facility includes office space and high density research and development laboratory space. The initial study highlighted energy efficiency and sustainability measures incorporated during the original building design, construction and operations phase, which correlated with LEED prerequisites and points. Additional LEED points required either modification to existing infrastructures or process improvements to further a positive impact on the environment.

EMC's LEED Gold - Existing Buildings certification was awarded 61 points, four points shy of Platinum certification. Highlights of the LEED certification include:

  • Energy efficiency projects totaling over 1.9M annual kwh savings
  • Enhanced recycling of more than 60 percent and composting with zero waste to landfill
  • Environmentally friendly cleaning and pest management programs
  • Organic landscaping and grey water irrigation
  • Hybrid shuttle vehicles
  • Wastewater Treatment Facility recycling 100% of sewage water with 5.8 million gallons of water recycled in 2010

"EMC's achievement of LEED - EB Gold certification was a collaborative effort between the Global Real Estate and Facilities Department, EMC employees and our valuable facility vendors," said Dan Fitzgerald, Vice President, Global Real Estate and Facilities. "Additionally, EMC's commitment to research and development of increasingly energy efficient products, demonstrated to the USGBC that the benefits of EMC's commitment to sustainability extend beyond our development laboratories to the wider landscape of our customers' energy consumption."

EMC has earned LEED and similar certifications for other buildings and interiors around the world. In 2010, EMC and its subsidiaries earned: LEED India Core & Shell Gold certification for the EMC Center of Excellence, Bangalore, India; LEED Platinum certification for critical infrastructure at the VMware Data Center, Washington State, U.S.; and the Haute Qualite Environmentale (HQE) certification for EMC's offices at River Ouest, Paris, France.

"Earning LEED certification for our corporate headquarters is a milestone for our company and our sustainability initiatives," said Kathrin Winkler, Vice President, Corporate Sustainability. "The certification represents our company-wide commitment to reducing our energy footprint."
