Kennametal Innovates Business with EMC Information Infrastructure

HOPKINTON, MASS - February 12, 2008

HOPKINTON, MASS, February 12, 2008 -

EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC), the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, today announced that Kennametal Inc.'s information technology transformation has driven the business innovation needed to speed custom solutions to market for customers globally.

"Kennametal has an aggressive growth strategy," said Raj Datt, Kennametal's Vice President and Chief Information Officer. "We needed an information infrastructure that supports our rapidly-growing corporation, incorporates the demands of a custom solutions business and helps achieve top line growth and profitability. EMC provides the foundational architecture to take traditional manufacturing to a whole new level."

Kennametal is a leading global supplier of tooling, engineered components and advanced materials consumed by companies producing everything from airframes to coal, medical implants to oil wells, and turbochargers to motorcycle parts. Kennametal also offers customers custom solutions that require an infrastructure that delivers products on time, on budget and according to customer specifications. Consequently, Kennametal needed to simplify, standardize and innovate its processes and technology to grow faster than the industry and lower costs to stay ahead of the competition.

"To transform IT, we began deploying solutions that extract and make critical information accessible to business owners that make daily business decisions for their product placement, market penetration, channel, product lifecycle management and new product development strategies," said Vikram Mishra, Kennametal's Manager of IT Procurement, Global Travel and Corporate Office Services. "By better managing our information, we're able to improve our customer satisfaction and Kennametal's competitive advantage."

Working with EMC Global Services, Kennametal designed and implemented a robust, high performance and scalable information infrastructure to align IT with its critical business applications for email, ERP, logistics, supply chain and human resources processes. As part of its information lifecycle management (ILM) strategy, Kennametal chose EMC Symmetrix® DMX-4 and EMC CLARiiON® CX3-80 networked storage to tier its information according to the appropriate service level and EMC Centera® for its archive. To improve productivity, increase performance and lower storage management costs, Kennametal uses EMC ControlCenter® storage resource management software.

"This robust, reliable and scalable information infrastructure is a strategic investment and a key component of Kennametal's IT transformation strategy," said Datt. "Having an infrastructure that is highly responsive to the growing demands of business has enabled us to evolve from a traditional tool manufacturer to a cutting-edge manufacturer."

"To transform its business, Kennametal needed to reign in its information growth and enable users to quickly and easily access critical information," said Barbara Robidoux, Vice President of Product Marketing for EMC's Storage Division. "We're pleased they chose EMC Symmetrix DMX-4. It is the most cost-effective, easy-to-use, secure and energy efficient high performance networked storage system on the market today and will help Kennametal overcome their most pressing information challenges and widen its competitive lead."
