Performance and quality end user experience can be an issue in large virtual desktop environments. Small changes have a big impact. For example, a single desktop might execute 15 to 20 input/output operations per second (IOPS) which the infrastructure can easily support, but adding an additional desktop doubles the IOPS requirement on the infrastructure. An enterprise virtual desktop rollout involving thousands of desktops increases IOPS by orders of magnitude.
Technology Solution
EMC Desktop Virtualization Solutions with Citrix XenDesktop use a Flash-first strategy to help guarantee a quality virtual desktop experience at scale. As part of that strategy, our solutions leverage EMC Flash drives and EMC fully automated storage tiering (FAST) Cache, which extends system cache by up to 2 TB—keeping desktops responsive even during unexpected peaks in workloads.
Desktop Virtualization Solutions with Citrix XenDesktop increase scalability in virtual desktop environments. EMC FAST Cache helps to ensure performance at scale by mitigating the impact of boot storms, antivirus scans, patching, and recompose operations.
These solutions also offer comprehensive disaster avoidance and recovery as well as backup and recovery for virtual desktops. EMC Avamar provides a unified backup approach for user files and images. All backups are stored as “virtual full backups” ready for immediate restore, which maintains effective consolidation ratios without overtaxing the central processing unit (CPU). Tight integration between EMC storage systems, Citrix XenDesktop, and leading virtualization platforms enables disaster recovery protection to easily be extended to all desktops.
