XtremIO Operating System (XIOS)
The EMC XtremIO storage cluster is managed by XIOS, XtremIO’s powerful operating system, ensuring that the system remains balanced and always delivers top performance—without administrator intervention.
XIOS ensures that all solid-state drives (SSDs) in the system are evenly loaded, optimizing both performance and endurance to match demanding workloads for the life of the array.
XIOS eliminates the complex configuration steps required by traditional arrays—there is no need to set redundant array of independent disks (RAID) levels, determine drive group sizes, set stripe widths or caching policies, or build aggregates. XIOS automatically and optimally configures every volume.

XtremIO's scale-out architecture grows performance and capacity in linear steps, under a single point of management.
- Inherently Balanced
XtremIO’s unique internal architecture inherently balances data across all controllers and all solid-state drives (SSDs), automatically delivering maximum performance without the need for any setup or tuning steps.
- True Inline Data Reduction
XtremIO automatically and globally deduplicates data as it enters the system, in real time—with no background processes, added reads or writes, or performance degradation.
- High Availability
No hardware component or software module is a single point of failure. The system rapidly recovers from failures, with upgrades being applied nondisruptively.
- Thin Provisioning
XtremIO storage is natively thin provisioned, using a small 4KB internal block size. All volumes are thin-provisioned so that the system consumes capacity only as needed for storing unique 4KB blocks.
XtremIO Data Protection
XtremIO’s “self-healing,” double-party data protection requires just an eight percent capacity overhead, outperforms traditional redundant arrays of independent disks (RAIDs), and requires no dedicated spare drives.
