ScaleIO Elastic, Converged Storage
EMC ScaleIO is a software-only server-based storage area network (SAN) that converges storage and compute resources to form a single-layer, enterprise-grade storage product. ScaleIO storage is elastic and delivers linear scalable performance. Its scale-out server SAN architecture can grow from a few to thousands of servers.
Scalability and Performance
Breaking traditional barriers of storage scalability, ScaleIO scales out to hundreds and thousands of nodes. The parallel architecture and distributed volume layout deliver a massively parallel system that deliver I/O operations through a distributed system. As a result, performance can scale linearly with the number of application servers and disks.
We’ve carefully designed and implemented ScaleIO software components so as to consume minimal computing resources.
Elasticity and Resilience
With ScaleIO, any administrator can add, move, or remove servers and capacity on demand during I/O operations. The software responds automatically to any infrastructure change and rebalances data accordingly across the grid nondisruptively.
ScaleIO natively supports all leading Linux distributions and hypervisors. It works agnostically with any solid-state drive (SSD) or hard disk drive (HDD) regardless of type, model, or speed.

Single-layer, Converged Architecture
EMC ScaleIO converges compute and storage resources into a single-layer architecture, running directly on the application servers. As a result, ScaleIO creates a pool of shared storage, aggregating the server's direct attached storage to create a server storage area network (SAN).
Organizations can add, move, or remove disks and servers on the fly and without any downtime. Modifying the capacity can be done in small or large increments, as required.
High-performance, Scale-out Deployment
ScaleIO can scale to thousands of nodes. Workloads are always shared among multiple SDCs, manifesting massively parallel I/O.
ScaleIO is hardware-agnostic and runs on any commodity servers. For instance, ScaleIO runs on Linux, Microsoft Windows, and virtual environments such as VMWare, Xen and Hyper-V, using the same architecture and exposing the same functionality.
ScaleIO software consists of two elements: the ScaleIO data client (SDC) and the ScaleIO data server (SDS). Organizations can install either of these elements on any application server. Both the SDC and SDS have a small footprint and minimal overhead.
The SDC is a lightweight device driver, serving I/O requests of local applications. It exposes to its clients volumes that are currently mapped to that host.
The SDS is a lightweight component that’s situated in each host and that contributes local storage to the server SAN.
ScaleIO protects data via a mesh mirroring architecture for full redundancy. Users never notice failures as I/O operations continue uninterrupted during failures, rebuilds, and rebalancing.
Applications use the local SDC to perform I/O operations. The SDC routes the operation to the SDS that “owns” that part of the shared storage to perform the read or write operation.
