Meet the Key Players from Lotus F1 Team and EMC

Lotus F1 Team

  • Matthew Carter, Lotus F1 Team

    Matthew Carter

    Chief Executive Officer

    Lotus F1 Team

Matthew graduated from Bradford University in 1996 with a Management and Engineering degree. Following university, Matthew focused on running his own company, namely buying businesses before adding value to them and then selling. In 2010, Matthew met and joined Lotus F1 Team shareholder Andy Ruhan at Bridgehouse Capital. Within his role, he assisted on numerous purchases and "turn around deals," as well as running a number of existing businesses.

Matthew joined Lotus F1 Team as CEO in January 2014 to oversee the transition of a team punching well above its weight into a genuine and consistent title challenger, and to build upon the foundations laid in the last few years. Matthew’s professional focus is on maintaining the team’s unique approach to F1, delivering better return on investment for partners, and to implement a clear process for managing expectations from partners, staff, and fans combined.

  • Patrick Louis, Lotus F1 Team

    Patrick Louis

    Board Member

    Lotus F1 Team

Originally from St. Vith, Belgium, Patrick Louis graduated with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the European University in 1983 before achieving a Master of International Management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in 1984. Patrick went on to spend the next 25 years working as an independent consultant, specializing in the restructuring of organizations across the globe.

In 2010 Patrick assumed the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Lotus F1 Team (then Renault F1 Team) as part of a "new-look" management structure that was implemented following Genii Capital’s acquisition of the Formula 1 outfit earlier that year. Initially, he focused on restructuring processes and procedures within the team including structural changes in the organization chart for increased efficiency and lean manufacturing. In 2012 Patrick took up the position of Chief Executive Officer to ensure effective utilization of that restructuring.

During his time with the team thus far, Patrick has overseen significant changes at the squad’s Enstone base including development and implementation of such state-of-the-art technologies as a driver-in-the-loop simulator and gearbox dyno, an upgrade to the team’s wind tunnel from 50 percent to 60 percent scale, and a complete Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) facility revamp.

  • Michael Taylor, Lotus F1 Team

    Michael Taylor

    CIO

    Lotus F1 Team

Michael has been a part of the Lotus F1 Team setup for the past eleven years; joining the Enstone-based Formula 1 outfit in its former guise of Renault F1 Team in 2002. During that time, he has developed a detailed business-based understanding of the Team’s IT needs through experience across a number of facets of the team; from the race squad itself to manufacturing, supply chain, and finance.

Michael has responsibility for all information systems at Enstone, incorporating factory-based design, simulation, and manufacturing and trackside performance systems. His responsibilities range from determining strategic direction within the team’s technology infrastructure, to both managing existing and developing new IT-related partnerships. Recent major projects within this remit include the team’s Microsoft Dynamics AX transformation—a major IT data center transformation incorporating network and server / storage infrastructure alongside Technical Partners Juniper and EMC—in addition to the team’s movement towards cloud computing.

A BCS member with numerous industry professional qualifications, Michael describes himself as a “technological dreamer” and enjoys food, socializing, and all sports (both playing and watching).

  • Nick Chester, Lotus F1 Team

    Nick Chester

    Technical Director

    Lotus F1 Team

After graduating from Cambridge in 1991, Nick joined Simtek Research to work on vehicle simulation projects. Simtek launched its own team to take on the 1994 Formula 1 World Championship, with Nick continuing his role in vehicle simulation for the newly formed Simtek Grand Prix outfit.

When Simtek withdrew from the sport towards the end of 1995, Nick made the switch to Arrows Grand Prix; initially continuing his work in vehicle simulation before moving into suspension design. In 1997 he took on the position of Performance Engineer for Damon Hill and Pedro Diniz before becoming Race Engineer for Mika Salo and Pedro de la Rosa in 1998 and 1999 respectively.

The start of the 2000 season heralded the beginning of Nick’s Enstone career. Joining Benetton as Test Engineer to Alexander Wurz, Giancarlo Fisichella and Mark Webber, he would graduate to the role of Performance Engineer for Fisichella the following year before adopting the same position alongside Jarno Trulli between 2002 – 2004, helping the Italian to his first and only Grand Prix at the 2004 Monaco Grand Prix.

2005 saw Nick with a new posting as Head of Vehicle Performance Group; governing suspension, brakes, and simulation. Under Nick’s guidance, VPG played a key role bringing both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ World Championships back to Enstone in the 2005 / 2006 seasons; introducing the “tuned mass damper” system which would prove a major innovation of the period.

By 2010, Nick had progressed further to take on a position as Head of Performance Systems, overseeing the team’s Vehicle Performance Group, Control Systems, and Dyno operations. In 2011 Nick took on the new role of Engineering Director before assuming his present tenure as Technical Director in May 2013.
