    The EMC Datacenter network infrastructure is a tiered model comprised of Cisco Nexus virtual and physical switching hardware. At the core of the Datacenter network is a pair of Cisco Nexus 7018 switches. The Nexus 7000 series switches provide full redundancy, high density 10, 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces and up to 17.6 Terabytes per second switching capacity. Virtualization in the Data Center starts at this tier within the Nexus 7000 where Virtual Device Context are defined to logically separate out the Core Data Center infrastructure from the VMware Virtual Desktop environments.

    The Data Center is designed as a regional or pod layout and within each region there is a pair of redundant Nexus 5000 series switches uplinked to the Core via 8 – 10GB Ethernet links providing 80GB of capacity. The Nexus 5000 series switches provide cut-through low latency switching at 10GB line rate speeds. The Nexus 5000’s are a unified switching fabric providing support for both 10G Ethernet and FCoE connectivity on all interfaces. High capacity services such as BRS Backup and NAS as well as application services connect into the Nexus 5000’s.

    The Nexus 5000’s are also where the Vblock connects. The Vblock consist of the Nexus 6000 series switches which again connect to the Nexus 5000’s via 8 – 10GB Ethernet links providing 80GB of capacity. In the current network topology the SAN infrastructure is connected directly to the Nexus 6000s and FCoE is configured between the UCS compute platform and the Nexus 6000 interfaces.

    Switching within the Vblock VMware ESX environments is supported by the Cisco 1000v virtual distributed switch. The 1000v runs the same common NXoS operating system as the Nexus 7000 and 5000 switches providing a common interface and support structure across the Data Center network. The 1000v provides advanced virtualization technologies which allows for the integration of virtual service appliances such as Cisco Virtual Security Gateways, Virtual WAAS, and virtual load balancers.

            Greenplum

            EMC Greenplum Data Computing Appliance (DCA) utilizes a massively parallel processing (MPP) architecture, delivering a very fast data-loading rate. It is a unified Big Data analytics appliance—a modular solution for structured data, unstructured data, and Greenplum applications such as business intelligence (BI), and extract, transform and load (ETL).

            EMC’s Business Intelligence as a Service (BIaaS) offering is hosted on EMC GreenPlum Data Computing Appliance (DCA) which includes Greenplum Database. It is a full rack DCA (type GP1000), having two master servers, 16 segment servers, consisting of 192 processors with 768 GB of memory, 36 TB of usable storage.

            The backend of the DCA is directly connected to our Enterprise ETL platform which is hosted on a virtual infrastructure to load the data from various sources into GreenPlum DCA at high speeds.

            Deployment Use Cases

            • BIaaS - Supports 18+ TB of data, 9 different analytics, 300+ named users, with multi tenancy and security standards in place. The business is able to do agile analytics and improve total customer experience (TCE).
            • Security Analytics - Our security organization was faced with challenges with traditional processing of huge amounts (40 TB) of logs, logins, access and audit data. We deployed Greenplum for real-time loading of ~1 billion events per day while reports and analytics are running on massive amounts of data on a full rack DCA.
            • Data Center Analytics - Data Center Metrics (IT Events, Incidents and Problem Management) Separate Marts created for Microsoft exchange, IT incident management and infrastructure monitoring.
            • EMC Community Network (ECN) - EMC Community Network is hosted on the Jive analytics collaboration platform. The reports are used to validate the contribution of individuals who are committed participations in support forums. To make the analytics easier and publish the data in a consumable format, we built a Greenplum based data mart solution.
