New EMC Storage Systems Lineup Forms Bedrock of EMC E-Infostructure

World’s Largest-capacity and Departmental/Workgroup Storage Systems Tear Down Limits for Information Management

New York,, Tuesday, April 25, 2000 -

EMC Corporation, the world's leading provider of enterprise storage systems, software and services, today unveiled a lineup of new storage systems that solidifies its position as the premier infrastructure provider in helping customers build their businesses around information. The company announced immediate availability of a complete new line of its flagship Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems - the Symmetrix 8000 family - and the new EMC CLARiiON FC4500 systems and software.

Through EMC Symmetrix and EMC CLARiiON systems, EMC is delivering the foundation of an agile, centrally managed information infrastructure - or EMC E-Infostructure. EMC E-Infostructure delivers the powerful and flexible platform necessary to reach beyond the data center and handle the most demanding information storage needs, from the workgroup to the workforce and beyond.

Michael Ruffolo, EMC's Executive Vice President of Global Sales, Services and Marketing, said, "In this new era of constructing businesses out of information, the primary investment is in information infrastructure. At the center is the storage capable of handling virtually infinite demands. EMC's new Symmetrix and CLARiiON storage systems provide the base for this infrastructure and tear down limits on the speed and scale at which information can be gathered and leveraged."

New Family of Symmetrix Enterprise Storage Systems The new EMC Symmetrix 8000 Enterprise Storage systems reset the metrics by which storage systems are evaluated by delivering the world's largest capacity, widest connectivity, unparalleled performance and superior software functionality. Symmetrix 8000 Enterprise Storage Systems include the following enhancements:

  • EnginuityTM Operating Environment -- Much of the extraordinary market acceptance of Symmetrix is a direct outgrowth of the strategic investments EMC has made in storage systems software. Symmetrix 8000 systems advance that lead further with the EMC Enginuity Operating Environment, forming the foundation for a wealth of software functionality (e.g. advanced data protection, standardized management, high-performance data movement, load balancing, etc.) that has remained the hallmark of Symmetrix value. By providing building blocks for integrating layered third-party software, EMC is giving software developers wide-scale access to Symmetrix Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), enabling them to develop a wide variety of Symmetrix information management, sharing and protection software that customers can select and rapidly deploy.
  • Three to four times the performance of competitive systems -- Symmetrix 8000 systems incorporate new, industry-leading internal components designed to deliver unmatched levels of performance, throughput and bandwidth to support I/O intensive applications such as ERP, e-Commerce, and OLTP.
  • More than doubled the capacity -- The world's highest-capacity disk storage system, Symmetrix 8000 supports up to 19.1 terabytes of storage in the same 17.3 square-foot floor space. This announcement breaks new ground in the ability of EMC Enterprise Storage to scale up with -- and provide unrivaled information management, protection and sharing for -- the increasingly aggressive storage needs of today's data-intensive Internet, data warehousing and customer relationship management (CRM) applications.

Jon Prall, Vice President of Operations for Excite@Home, said, "The Symmetrix 8000 further cements EMC Enterprise Storage as the strategic core of our information infrastructure. In the last year, we've added millions of users, introduced terabytes of new multimedia content and made major enhancements to our online services. The Symmetrix 8000's performance and capacity gains allow us to handle seamlessly an information avalanche and move to the next phase of our business expansion.

"For example, we experienced a 400 percent jump in storage performance as soon as we consolidated our search engine database onto the Symmetrix 8000," Prall continued. "By eliminating the I/O bottleneck that previously choked our servers, the Symmetrix 8000 enables them to operate at peak capacity. EMC's centralized storage environment has eliminated a massive effort of replicating search engine data across multiple servers. The results are significantly lower operational costs and an IT staff freer to pursue customer-focused activities."

EMC CLARiiON FC4500 Enters Multi-host Storage Network EMC today launched the CLARiiON FC4500 storage system, ushering CLARiiON into the world of EMC Enterprise Storage Networks. The new system is the first CLARiiON offering to support storage consolidation for multiple, heterogeneous hosts (shared access for Sun Solaris, Windows NT, HP-UX and IBM AIX), participate in switched Fibre Channel networks through connectivity to the EMC Connectrix family of Enterprise Storage Network Systems, and deliver significant new software functionality (see separate release.)

Matt Turner, Director of Network Operations for Liquid Audio, Inc., a leading provider of software and services for the Internet delivery of music, said, "Our ability to connect thousands of artists and record labels to the Web's largest music retail network depends in great part on our storage infrastructure. EMC CLARiiON 4500 delivers remarkable performance and reliability, as well as the flexibility to shift gears as we grow and change. EMC has given us the technology for today with a clear path to the future."

Together, EMC Symmetrix and EMC CLARiiON storage platforms help customers protect and leverage all their information, from entry-level to enterprise. While EMC Symmetrix systems are the world's most advanced for enterprise-level storage requirements, EMC CLARiiON systems clearly stand above the midrange market for highly distributed and critical standalone server environments of large enterprises and rapidly growing emerging companies.
