EMC Wins Best Practice Award from the New England Employee Benefits Council

EMC Recognized for Innovative Approach to Employee Health Management

HOPKINTON, Mass., December 3, 2009 - 

EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC), the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, announced today that the company has been honored with the Best Practice Award from the New England Employee Benefits Council (NEEBC) for its SmartBeat Remote Patient Monitoring Program. EMC is the first company to participate in SmartBeat, a clinical-trial and employee-engagement initiative rolled out to EMC's U.S. employees in collaboration with the Center for Connected Health (CCH), a division of Partners Healthcare. SmartBeat uses a wireless blood pressure cuff and communicator and an Internet-based feedback system to help employees self-manage their high blood pressure.

SmartBeat's approach to employee health is indicative of EMC's culture of creativity and cutting-edge technology," EMC's Senior Director of Benefits and Programs, Delia Vetter, explained. "Our focus on connected health means partnering with our employees in their health and promoting good health management through the adoption of new and innovative healthcare technologies and programs. This ultimately empowers our employees to more effectively manage chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and improve their health."

The NEEBC's Best Practice Award recognizes organizations for innovation and creativity in the planning and delivery of employee benefit programs.

"NEEBC's 'Best Practice' Conference, now in its 11th year, has become an annual tradition in the local benefits/HR community," said Jack Curley, Executive Director of the New England Employee Benefits Council. "Awards are presented to organizations who demonstrate excellence and innovation in the design and delivery of a benefits program. The quality of work done at EMC is evident in the unprecedented six awards they've received since the program's inception."

Rolled out on a voluntary-basis to EMC's US-based employees in 2008, SmartBeat has enrolled over 400 employees with hypertension or pre-hypertension. Participants from several EMC locations, which are selected at random, use home blood pressure monitors that store and transmit data, and an Internet-based self-management system. All participating employees can securely and confidentially share personal data with their health care providers, and have access to personalized educational content with data-driven feedback.

This is the sixth time EMC has received a Best Practice Award from the NEEBC. EMC has also recently been recognized by the American Heart Association as a Platinum-Level Start! Fit-Friendly Company and is the first employer to be recognized as a finalist for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts's Healthcare Excellence Award.
