EMC a Leader in Virtual Tape Libraries Writes Top Independent Research Firm

Independent Report Cites EMC Disk Librar' Large Installed Base and ""Broad Ecosystem Interoperability""

HOPKINTON, Mass., February 19, 2008 -

EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC) today announced it has been positioned as a leader in the Forrester Wave™: Enterprise Open Systems Virtual Tape Library (VTL), Q1 2008 by Forrester Research, Inc. (January 31, 2008), an independent market and technology research firm. EMC achieved a position as a leader in the Forrester Wave report on virtual tape libraries based on the largest installed base of the EMC® Disk Library family of systems, its broad ecosystem interoperability. Virtual tape libraries emulate tape drives and work in conjunction with existing backup software applications, enabling fast backup and restoration of data by using high-capacity, low-cost disk drives.

EMC was the first major vendor in the open systems virtual tape library market as it introduced the EMC Disk Library in April 2004 and today is a leading provider of open systems virtual tape solutions, with systems that are designed for businesses and organizations of all sizes. The EMC Disk Library portfolio supports more than three million of these configuration combinations — more than any other open virtual tape solution on the market. More than 1,100 customers have deployed the EMC Disk Library through the end of the 2007.

According to Forrester, "Given that the EMC Disk Library has been available in the market for more than three years, it has the largest installed customer base of any vendor and has an impressive number of new customers, repeat customers, and reference accounts… Because these storage platforms are underlying disk subsystems for the VTL, any advances in these platforms — whether in interfaces, interconnects, or drives — improve the scale and reliability of the VTL."

In October 2007, EMC expanded the EMC Disk Library family's support to include new one terabyte (TB) SATA disk drives that increase system capacity by 30 percent and improve the overall economics of online backup by further lowering the cost per gigabyte of storage. The largest EMC Disk Library system, which leverages technology from both FalconStor and EMC, can support a massive one petabyte of data. In addition, the Disk Library provides the industry's only consolidated media management, designed to allow customers control of their tape pool (both virtual and physical) through a single application interface, solving the complexity of managing multiple applications in the backup environment.

Barbara Robidoux, Vice President of Product Marketing, EMC Storage Division, said, "We are proud of the continued success of the EMC Disk Library family, and will continue to make significant investments in our portfolio of disk-based backup solutions. By re-writing the book on backup and, more importantly, recovery, we're helping customers eliminate much of the risk of tape-based backups. The latest additions to the EMC Disk Library use the latest disk drive technology to give customers even more capacity in the same amount of space. Most importantly, we've done the hard work to make sure EMC Disk Library can seamlessly fit into existing backup processes and work with existing applications, making it easier for customers to switch and achieve the benefits of virtual tape."
