Where does opportunity come from? Ask Kristina and she’ll say that at EMC it comes from the team. From the beginning she’s noticed that "you do what you can to help other people, and they do the same for you." Everybody feels like they’re part of a team, so everyone has high expectations for contributing. And meeting expectations creates opportunities for everyone. "The expectations go both ways," she adds. "We expect a lot from the leaders and vice versa."

Kristina’s team is responsible for revenue reporting across the entire EMC organization—tracking revenue throughout the quarter, and measuring performance against goals and historical data. They also assist with revenue planning to forecast expected revenues. "What we come up with at the end of every quarter is a tangible result—and a lot of important decisions are made based on that information."

Kristina’s path to this position has led her through a number of different departments. "We promote internal moves," she explains, "so people acquire different expertise and perspectives." She began at EMC as a member of the Revenue Operations group, which accepts and processes purchase orders. "It was a group of young people, and everyone had a good attitude," she recalls.

After about a year, she moved into a group within the finance department that supports business planning with data from sales and manufacturing. Kristina also helped migrate the group’s ERP system—and prepared forecasts from global manufacturing plants.

As much as she likes this diversity of experience, what she likes best about working at EMC is the idea that she’s really defining her own role. As you rise in the organization there’s more opportunity to turn the job you have into the job you want. "Sometimes it can be hard to find the right balance between all the different options," she says, "but that’s really the part that’s most interesting." It all comes down to the fact that everyone’s part of the team—and EMC wants every member to be as happy as possible.

Kristina looks for one key quality in fellow team members—trust. "I need my team to tell me before there’s a problem so I can do something about it," she says. She’s also noticed that everyone is enthusiastic when they start a job. She looks for people who will take the initiative to turn the job into something they’ll continue to be enthusiastic about.
