Education: University Relations
EMC’s University Relations organization recruits from colleges and universities worldwide. We develop relationships with schools from which we have demonstrated success in recruiting and retaining high-performing graduates.
Strategy
We have a three-prong approach to our partnerships:
- EMC Core Schools —These schools produce graduates from multiple disciplines who are well-matched to our hiring needs. We have had consistent, long-term success with the recruits from these colleges and universities.
- Nationally Ranked Premier Schools —We partner with these schools for recruiting and also for research and development.
- Point Solution Schools —We recruit from these schools to help meet targeted business needs, including employee diversity and certain specific skill sets.
Intern and co-op conversion
A standard measure of success for an internship program is the conversion rate, or the percentage of interns who take a job with the company after graduation. Our conversion rate was 72 percent in 2006-2007, and 75 percent in 2007-2008, well above our industry average of 52 percent, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
Performance and retention of college hires
In 2008, EMC completed a four-year performance and retention study of our new college hires. We found that 52 percent had successfully met their managers’ expectations, and 46 percent had exceeded them. We also had a 91 percent retention rate in the first year of working at the company, and 80 percent retention after three years. This three-year retention rate is 1 percent above our industry average, according to NACE.
