Product Compliance
EMC is committed to compliance with all applicable laws and regulations in the regions and markets we serve. Our International Environmental Requirements steering group (IER), established in 2003, is responsible for product compliance across our entire portfolio. This cross-functional group monitors industry and legislative environmental requirements worldwide, and formulates programs and policies for the design and manufacture of environmentally responsible products.
In response to the work of the IER, EMC established a tactical team to execute environmental compliance programs and policies. This group is dedicated to providing information relating to environmental product compliance to both internal and external customers.
The following compliance programs represent some of our larger initiatives:
EU RoHS compliance
All products supplied by EMC and initially placed on the EU market after July 1, 2006 meet with the requirements of the Restriction on the use of certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive. (Product units placed on the market before July 1, 2006—or spare parts for the repair of units placed on the market before that date—are outside the scope of the RoHS Directive).
To ensure ongoing RoHS compliance, EMC has implemented a formalized quality-check process. We maintain records and RoHS Compliance Declarations from all our suppliers of materials and parts that are used in the assembly and manufacture of EMC storage platform products.
All products purchased with the intention of subsequent integration into another product of the customer’s creation—which is also aimed at the EU market—must be reviewed with EMC on a case-by-case basis to determine RoHS requirements and applicable exemptions.
China RoHS compliance
All EMC products manufactured on or after March 1, 2007 and supplied to customers comply with the requirements stipulated in the China-RoHS Phase I EIP regulations. According to official statements from the Ministry of Information Industry (MII), the China-RoHS regulations do not apply to products that had been manufactured prior to March 1, 2007.
EMC products or spare parts purchased with the intention of subsequent integration into another product of a customer’s creation, or for separate distribution also aimed at the China market, must be reviewed with EMC on a case-by-case basis to ensure that such products/sales remain in compliance with the EIP criteria.
As part of ongoing compliance efforts, EMC is monitoring China ROHS Phase II to determine applicability to EMC products.
EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) compliance
EMC provides an easy way to recycle all of its storage platform products subject to European Directive 2002/96/EC for WEEE. For identification, products are clearly marked with the WEEE logo. In addition, EMC or, as appropriate, its distributors will be registered as a WEEE Producer in all EU countries.
EMC has an established product recycling process supporting all EU customer locations. EU customers may contact EMC service or sales representatives or an EMC distributor to arrange for the collection or take-back of EMC products for proper recycling.
EMC Channel Partners and EMC-authorized WEEE treatment vendors can obtain more information via their assigned EMC PowerLink connections.
EU REACH
EMC products are fully compliant with the EU Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation. The EU REACH Regulation's restrictions program aims to protect the general public and the environment against the effects of certain dangerous substances and preparations. Through collaboration with the supply base, EMC has been able to identify the use of any of the first 15 Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) used within articles at a concentration of greater than 0.1% w/w.
In addition, EMC is proactively working to implement an Environmental Regulatory Compliance (ERC) system. This system will allow EMC to collect and report on all materials within our products (full material disclosure). This module will allow EMC to quickly assess the impact of future additions to the SVHC list, as well as the expanding number of regulations in regions outside of the EU.
Hazardous substance reduction
EMC goes beyond the minimum of complying with legal requirements by actively pursuing the elimination of hazardous substances in its products and by sourcing alternatives that do not negatively affect product quality, reliability, or cost.
