Industry Groups and Energy Efficiency
EMC works continuously to improve the energy efficiency of its products and solutions and to arrive at new ways in which its storage and information management offerings can contribute to a more energy-efficient world.
To achieve best results in product development, meaningful metrics for energy efficiency in the data center are essential. There are, however, a number of factors that make it difficult to precisely and consistently calculate IT energy efficiency.
To address this, EMC engages in industry groups that set standards to direct product development across the industry and shape the impact that IT use has on the environment. EMC is also active in public policy organizations that study and promote the most effective means of using information technology to decrease energy consumption while improving economic growth and quality of life.
The Green Grid
This global consortium of companies is dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centers and computing ecosystems. The Green Grid is developing platform-neutral standards, metrics, processes, and technologies to improve energy efficiency in the data center. EMC and VMware are active members, EMC chairs a working group in the Technical Committee, and VMware is a member of The Green Grid board.
Information Technology Industry Council
The ITIC is an organization of the leading high-tech companies in the U.S. EMC chairs the council’s High Tech Energy Policy committee, whose agenda includes: incentives for telecommuting; focusing government procurement power on energy efficient products; increasing federal funding for R&D on energy efficient IT; incentives for efficient data centers; and increasing funding for energy efficiency programs, such as Energy Star.
Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA)
SNIA develops standards, drives best practices, and educates on storage issues. Its Green Storage Initiative (GSI) focuses on data center energy use and energy-efficient design and operation. EMC is a Strategic Voting Member Company of the GSI. A senior EMC employee serves as chairman for the overall organization.
Technology CEO Council
This public policy organization of CEOs from leading IT companies sets environmental goals for its members, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Climate Leaders participation, compliance with environmental standards and regulations, and creating metrics for energy-efficient data centers. EMC’s Chairman, President and CEO Joe Tucci is a member of the Technology CEO Council.
In 2008, the Technology CEO Council released “A Smarter Shade of Green,” a report that documents the energy-efficiency gains from specific technology initiatives, and advocates for public policies and corporate actions to spur further innovation. The group also sponsored a report by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy that speaks to the role IT plays in mitigating energy consumption in the economy.
Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF)
DMTF enables more effective management of millions of IT systems worldwide by bringing the IT industry together to collaborate on everything from systems management specification development and validation to promotion and industry-wide adoption. EMC and VMware representatives sit on the DMTF board.
Climate Savers Computing Initiative
Climate Savers is a nonprofit group of eco-conscious consumers, businesses, and conservation organizations. The initiative was started in the spirit of WWF’s Climate Savers program, which since 1999 has mobilized over a dozen companies to cut carbon dioxide emissions, demonstrating that reducing emissions is good business. EMC is a member company.
TechNet
TechNet is the bipartisan, political network of CEOs and senior executives that promotes the growth of technology and the innovation economy. TechNet focuses on politics and policy by bringing its members together with the nation's policy makers to sustain and advance America's global leadership in innovation, including a commitment to invest in and adopt innovative green technologies. EMC CEO Joe Tucci is a member of TechNet.
Uptime Institute
The Uptime Institute is dedicated to helping companies prevent data center downtime. Optimizing energy efficiency in the data center is a primary topic of the institute’s research. EMC is the only storage vendor certified by The Uptime Institute.
