Industry Groups and Data Center Energy Efficiency
EMC collaborates with customers, partners, peer companies, competitors, and government agencies to devise meaningful standards for energy efficiency in the data center. This ensures that companies benefit from each other's knowledge and experience and that we can contribute to the development of new industry standards. The organizations in which we actively participate include:
The Green Grid
This global consortium of companies is dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centers and computing ecosystems. The Green Grid is developing platform-neutral metrics and best practices to improve energy efficiency in the data center. EMC chairs a working group in the Technical Committee and participates in multiple working groups globally.
Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA)
SNIA’s Green Storage Initiative (GSI), on which EMC holds a board seat, develops standards and educates on best practices for data center energy efficiency. In 2008, we collaborated on the GSI white paper, “Best Practices for Energy Efficient Storage Operations.” EMC is a member of GSI Technical Work Groups in the areas of taxonomy definition, measurement definition, and power.
Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF)
This organization is defining protocols for measurement and management of energy efficiency. The position of President is held by VMware, and the positions of Vice President of Membership and Senior Vice President are held by EMC.
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
EMC engaged directly with the U.S. EPA to provide guidance on possible development of ENERGY STAR standards for data centers and data center equipment.
European Commission Joint Research Centre for Energy Efficiency
This organization released the European Code of Conduct on Data Centres Energy Efficiency, which helps European data centers develop and execute improvement plans. We contributed our expertise on Best Practices for Storage.
